Less than two years ago that the waterfront Señorio de Bocos took over the facilities that the wine cooperative Viña Escuderos launched in 2002 in Villamor de los Escuderos, in full Zamora Tierra del Vino.
The arrival of the Basque group to the province of Zamora makes strengthen its presence in Castilla and Leon, as currently has a warehouse in the Valladolid town of Bocos de Duero, which produces wines under the protection of D.O. Ribera de Duero and now, also operates processing facilities and raising Villamor, attached to the name Tierra del Vino de Zamora.
Señorio de Bocos took the witness Viña Escuderos and made some minor changes to make the first harvest in 2015 under the new brand. The philosophy of the initial project and varieties coming out of the cellar is maintained. He explains José del Valle, vintner who remains responsible for the facilities since the beginning of the activity of the cooperative, the intention is to realize the full potential of grape from Tierra del Vino to produce quality wines, noting especially in the old vines in the area.
Although Tierra del Vino de Zamora is mostly known for red wines, the winery has opted for the Verdejo, a variety that offers "fruity and very fresh 'wines that have shown that they are able to find their own niche and compete in the market with other denominations most renowned. Initially, recalls José del Valle, Verdejo was done with a small percentage of muscat small grain, only 5%, but the shortage of this variety makes it very difficult now incorporate the whites, so that has been chosen 100% Verdejo.
In the market you can find in a dual format, in green bottle, and a blue bottle with a highly stylized presentation. The latter, made with a special selection of Verdejo grapes, has won a gold medal at the New Wine competition last year.
Recognizes the winemaker foreman the difficulty of targets within a denomination primarily associated with red, but notes that soil conditions and climate of Tierra del Vino, especially those closest to Villamor municipalities, and the age of some strains with more than 50 years, they offer the best conditions.
The same approach is followed in drawing up the pink, a little testimonial wine production, around 10,000 bottles a year, however, has already won several awards, including the Silver Bacchus. The main feature in its development, he explains, is bleeding in the early days of fermentation of the grape.
As for the reds, so far, in the market you can find only one oak cask four months, although the intention of the winery is to produce a breeding, which will be released no earlier than next November. It is the only variety that is sold under a different name, Escudero de Bocos, precisely to avoid conflict with the group red wines produced in Ribera de Duero.
All Bocos wines produced in Tierra del Vino are made under the seal of the denomination of origin. Señorio de Bocos not have its own vineyard and sources close producers, many of them members of the initial cooperative, which launched the project to harness entrepreneurial grape production area.
Despite the history behind them facilities, it can be considered that Señorio de Bocos is just beginning in Tierra del Vino. The market, therefore the wines produced in this appellation is purely national. The promoters of the winery, however, intend to start exporting immediately and is currently undergoing the records to carry out sales in the United States and Panama.
